I have run Askay's (initially a catering company) since 1994.
My food business has been registered with firstly South Cambs, and since 1999 East Cambs Environmental Services. Askay's was recently awarded a 5-star rating under the Scores on Doors scheme. I hold basic and intermediate Food Hygiene Certificates.
Previously I was a teacher ----- KS1 and Special Needs.
As a caterer my emphasis was on providing tailor-made menus of interesting food, using good quality ingredients. I cooked for a variety of events at a range of venues. I ceased catering in September 2007.
Since 1994, my interest in Food History has grown. In that time I have also developed cookery demonstrations and courses, and food writing.
I have run cookery courses and workshops for a number of organisations which include Cambridgeshire Adult Education, WEA (for adults with learning difficulties, and Headway), Surestart, Calthorpe Project Community Garden etc. These courses / workshops have covered a wide range of topics, and have been aimed at different ages and skill and knowledge levels. I hold CRB certificates for working both with children and vulnerable adults.
I have written a regular column / recipe in Haddenham Aldreth and Wilburton Village Voice and have contributed recipes to the Haddenham website, as well as occasionally to other publications. Some years ago I was founding co-editor of an in-house special education magazine. I am a contributing editor to a website which is currently being developed to aid fruit identification.
I took part in an evaluation of Focus on Food's first Project Week. This involved school visits and report writing.
For the last 2 years I was one of the judges of East Anglian Daily Times Suffolk Magazine Food and Drink Awards Best Farm Shop.
I have carried out research on assorted food topics for a number of TV and film companies, and have been featured on local Radio (most recently Radio Essex).
I regularly attend courses, conferences and symposiums on Food History, Apples and Orchards, and other food-related topics. I have also been a volunteer at Kentwell during recreations of Tudor life ----- in the kitchen, dairy and herb garden.
I have been a Director (and briefly Chair of Board of Directors) of EEAOP (East of England Apples and Orchards Project), which at the time was a Company Limited by Guarantee, and which has since gained charitable status.
Previous event venues have included a number of National Trust properties, Audley End Walled Garden (English Heritage / Garden Organic), Imperial War Museum Duxford, National Archives, Borough Market, Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse etc.
I am a member of:
GEM (Group for Education in Museums) and GEM Freelancers' Network
EEAOP (East of England Apples and Orchards Project)
IfL (Institute for Learning)
